Vocalists can belong to any of the two primary categories of Indian classical music - Carnatic and Hindustani. Carnatic vocal is popular in the  southern part of India. Vocal is one of the key aspects of carnatic music since most of the compositions are meant for vocal rendering. Carnatic  vocalists have their own distinct style of singing. The guru-parampara or the school of music to which they belong influences their style of singing as well. There are several schools of carnatic music like Tyagaraja, Dikshitar, Syama Sastri and Papanasam Sivan.
