Mrudangam is a percussion instrument widely used in carnatic music. Since the instrument is associated with various deities in Hindu mythology, it is often referred to as 'Deva vaadyam' or divine instrument. Mrudangam also plays a very important role in Newa music. Tabla is widely considered as the counterpart of Mrudangam in Hindustani music. Tuning the instrument is important and is achieved by adjusting the leather straps spanning the frame of the instrument.
