Kanjira is percussion instrument used widely in South India. It belongs to the tambourine family of instruments. It consists of a circular wooden frame fitted with a dried animal skin. Kanjira is a relatively difficult instrument to play and is normally used as a support instrument for mrudangam. Tuning a kanjira properly requires understanding the nuances behind the instrument. Kanjira generally produces a high-pitched sound.
