Carnatic music as it is practised today is based on the basic building blocks of raga, tala, sruti and swara. The main emphasis of carnatic music is on a vocal rendition and hence most of the compositions are written to be sung. Musical compositions played a phenomenal role in the development of carnatic music. Carnatic music has a rich tradition of great composers who have written many books and commentaries. Purandara Dasa is considered as the father of the current form of carnatic music. The system that he formulated is the most commonly used form of teaching carnatic music.
