There are several notable compositions and works in carnatic music that have played a major role in defining this art form. There have been several notable composers in the traceable history right from 7th century to date including - nayanmars and alwars of the 7th century , Purarandara Dasa (father of the current form of carnatic music) in the 14th century, the trinity of carnatic music in the 18th century and the more recent set of composers. The compositions are in different languages including Sanskrit, tamil, telugu, kannada and Malayalam. The composers are generally classified into three different categories – Pre-Trinity Composers, Trinity-Age Composers and Post-Trinity Composers.
